«Liminal Lairs» is a solo work for voice, violin and tape; a structured improvisation, composed and performed by Vanessa Isobel Black (Visobel Black) under the Lunar Samhain moon.

For the fourth time, Visobel Black is returning with Liminal Lairs to the intimate and exquisite Emanuel Vigeland Museum in Oslo, Norway. It is always performed on the Lunar Samhain moon, which this year falls on Monday Nov 9th, and each year it evolves a little.

Liminal spaces are most often associated with fear, specifically fear of the unknown, and a lair as a place where something dangerous dwells. Tracing back though, liminal was defined as a threshold; a point of entrance or beginnings, a space between the ‘what was’ and the ‘next’, a place of transition and not knowing, and a lair was simply a bed or resting place. “Liminal Lairs” observes the notion of vibration and reverberation as a ghost performer in an attempt to provide a voice for hidden, lost or repressed traumas that have become trapped in those, at times frightening, liminal spaces; those which are no longer resting but stagnating, allowing them the opportunity to emerge, engage and exist as something ‘other’.

The mausoleum is a unique and intimate venue with a ca. 20 second reverb and dark fresco artwork representing life and death. The veils are thin over this Samhain time, so dare to peer over the threshold into the lairs of our ‘otherworlds’ as the new moon dons her black cloak to recharge and rebirth for another cycle.
